北アメリカの河川や湖沼、海岸などにすむカワウソの仲間で、体重は6～14㎏ほどに成長します。カワウソの仲間は鼻の形で見分けることができますが、カナダカワウソは大きくて三角形の鼻が特徴です。川岸などに穴を掘り、メスは単独で子育てをします。日本では、盛岡市動物公園、釧路市動物園、当館の3か所でしか飼育されていません。

Otters can be discerned in the form of noses,while North American river otters are characterized by large,triangular noses. Female will dig a burrow in the riverbank, and raise children alone.
