エトピリカは、普段は北太平洋の海の上で暮らし、水中をはばたくように泳いで魚を捕まえます。アイヌ語で「エト」は「くちばし」、「ピリカ」は「美しい」という意味のとおり、くちばしが美しい海鳥です。夏には目の上から房状の黄白色の飾り羽が垂れ下がるのが特徴的です。
Tufted puffin lives in the northern Pacific Ocean, diving under the waves and swimming to catch fish. The Japanese name derives from the native Ainu expression for “beautiful beak.” The English name comes from the yellow-white tufts that grow in the plumage above their eyes in the summer.
