フウセンウオは名前の通り、風船のような丸い体に、キョロキョロとよく動く目も愛嬌たっぷりの魚です。腹鰭が吸盤状に変化していて、普段は岩などの表面にくっついています。繁殖の時期になると、オスが巻き貝の貝殻を巣にして、メスが来るのを待っている様子を観察できます。メスがその巣を気に入って卵を産むと、オスは卵が孵化するまでの間、卵を保護します。
As the name suggests, the lumpfish have a lumpy and round body with big eyes. The fish’s modified pelvic fins have evolved into adhesive discs that stick to the surface of rocks. During the breeding season, males live in conch shells and wait for females. After the females have chosen a nest and laid eggs, males will stay and protect the eggs until they hatch.
