Japanese spider crabs live in the shores of Sanriku, Taiwan, and in the East China Sea. They live in sand or mud at depths of 200 m to 400 m, and they reach 4m when they spread their legs. They are the largest species of crab in the world. Although there is a strong impression that crabs walk sideways, Japanese spider crabs have joints at the end of their legs that allows them to move freely. So, they can walk sideways, forwards, and backwards.
