イルカもクジラも、同じ鯨類というグループに分けられます。鯨類の中でも口の中に歯があるものをハクジラ、櫛状のヒゲ板があるものをヒゲクジラといいますが、ハクジラの中でも大人になって全長4mほどより小さいものをイルカ、大きいものをクジラとよんでいます。しかし、生物学上明確に分かれてはいません。
Dolphins and whales belong to a group called Cetaceans. Ceteaceans with teeth are called toothed whales (Odontoceti) and those with comb-like baleen plates are called baleen whales (Mysticeti). Although they are not clearly distinguished in terms of biology, toothed whales that measure 4 m or less are called dolphins, whereas larger ones are called whales.
