マイワシは、大きな群れをつくって移動する「回遊魚」。マイワシは夏の初めごろから北の海に移動し、水温が下がってくると南に移動、冬から春にかけて日本各地の沿岸で産卵します。いつも口を大きく広げて泳いでいるのは、エサのプランクトンをエラでこしとって食べるためです。
Pilchard is a type of migratory fish that moves in large schools. They migrate north in early summer, then move south as the water cools. From winter to spring, they lay their eggs in Japan’s coastal waters. Pilchard live on plankton; they gulp water in, then use their gills to filter for plankton. That’s why they swim with their big mouths wide open.
